“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
God’s love for us is eternal and everlasting. It manifests in his compassion and in the many ways He leads us back to Him even when we err or sin against Him. Like the shepherd and the lost sheep in the proverb, the extent to which God loves us is beyond our ability to fathom, yet this love has never been in question. It is the greatest kind of love, surmounting any other.
As a Christian and a gospel artiste, I often find myself inspired by this love and by my desire to worship, thank and adore God in any situation I find myself. God speaks to my heart via the Holy Spirit, and my lips burst forth in praise and worship. This is why I can say that every single part of my songs- the lyrics, tone and rhythm- all come to me by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.
For me, and true for many other gospel singers, inspirations for my songs come to me through worship. How? You might ask. Its simple. I try to encapsulate and illustrate how good God is, how perfect and unique he is in his ways and this was no different in the writing of my debut song ‘Unending Love‘, where I sing about the extent of the love that the almighty has always shown me.
Let me share an anecdote about the inspiration for Unending Love…
On the day Unending Love was conceived in my heart, I had just gotten home after seeing the much anticipated result of an exam I had taken earlier. The result wasn’t what I had expected. I was unhappy and downcast, then I remembered the words of Psalm 31:17-
“I will be glad and rejoice in Your unfailing love, for You have seen my troubles, and You care about the anguish of my soul.”
So I did what I always do whenever I feel lost: I went down on my knees to talk to God. Soon, prayers morphed into worship, and a song grew in my heart and flowed from my lips as the almighty reminded me of the limitless love he has for me:
“Unending love is what you have for me, that you gave your one and only son.
Your love is deep, your love is wide
I am grateful for your unending love.”
The words flowed slowly from my mouth as I went into deep devotion. It was conceived as an emotional worship song, not a fast song like it currently is on streaming platforms, because I was on my knees, praying and shedding tears while singing it, crying to God at the same time. In that moment, the almighty told me to cast away my worries, that he is always by me every time and his love would never change nor be exhausted no matter what. Bashfully, I realised that God’s love is unquestionable; that when things do not take on the course we have intended, it is not because he has forsaken us, or that he no longer watches over us. But because He has greater plans for us.
As I worshipped in tears, the song became a reminder that God still loves me no matter what; and even if the exam had not gone how I wanted, he still wants the best for me. Just like Lamentations 3:32-33 says –
“Though He brings grief, He also shows compassion because of the greatness of His unfailing love. For He does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow.”
At the end of semester, when the grades came around, it turned out that the undesirable result had not affected my progress in school and I scaled through that phase without any difficulties. Just like me, in many of our experiences, sometimes life doesn’t go how we want; at times we want to see more, and we expect God to do more. And it might look like we no longer have God’s love. But we still do. This is what Unending Love reminds us of, that God’s love is infinite, more than we can comprehend and even deserve. Count your blessings, and you’ll see!
