Grab the Promises of God: Harden Not Your Heart

There’s a lesson I’ve been learning over and over in my journey of faith: God’s promises are alive, but they require an open heart to receive.

Psalm 95:7-8 warns us:

“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”

It’s so easy to hear God’s Word and still let fear, doubt, or past disappointments close the door of our hearts. And when that happens, even the most beautiful promise can’t take root.

The Danger of a Hardened Heart

I’ve had moments in my life when I was cautious, holding back from fully trusting God. Maybe you’ve been there too, hesitant to step into a calling, unsure if a promise will come true, afraid of being disappointed again. That hesitation can harden our hearts. It’s subtle, but it stops blessings from flowing and delays the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Choosing to Grab the Promises

“Grab the promises of God” isn’t just a phrase, it’s an action. It’s a conscious choice to step forward, to believe, and to act in faith even when circumstances seem unclear. It’s saying, “Lord, I receive what You’ve said, and I trust You to bring it to life in Your timing.”

In writing gospel songs, I had to learn this lesson too. I had to listen, obey, and trust even when I didn’t see the full picture. And God’s faithfulness never failed. The promises I held onto came to life in ways I could never have orchestrated on my own.

How to Keep Your Heart Soft

  1. Pray Honestly: Tell God your fears, doubts, and hopes.

  2. Meditate on His Word: Let scripture sink deep into your heart.

  3. Obey in Small Steps: Even little acts of faith prepare you for greater promises.

  4. Release Control: Trust His timing, His way, and His plan.

God’s promises are not just for tomorrow, they are for today. But they need an open, responsive heart to take root, grow, and bear fruit.

So today, I want to encourage you: listen closely, act boldly, and harden not your heart. Step into the promises God has spoken over your life, and watch Him move in ways only He can.
