Over the years, one truth has become crystal clear to me: God values obedience far more than talent.
This may sound surprising—especially in a world where talent often takes center stage—but in the kingdom of God, the stage is not where worship begins. It begins in the heart. And the heart that obeys is the one God trusts.
As a worship leader, I’ve seen incredibly gifted people sing, play, and lead. But I’ve also seen how far pure obedience can carry someone—even when they feel ordinary or overlooked. Obedience is the oil that sustains the fire of ministry. Without it, even the most beautiful voice or well-written song begins to run dry.
Obedience Invites God’s Presence
There have been times when I felt unqualified—when my voice didn’t feel strong enough, or I didn’t feel “ready.” But in those moments, God reminded me that what He requires most is my yes. Not my perfection. Not performance. Just my willingness to follow His leading.
When I said yes to writing my songs, it wasn’t because I had it all figured out. I was in a place of seeking and learning. But I knew the Holy Spirit was nudging me. And as I obeyed—even with my uncertainty—He gave the words, the melody, the message. And His presence followed.
Talent Can Open Doors, But Obedience Sustains the Call
It’s easy to focus on improving our gifts (and yes, we should steward them well!), but our first calling is always to walk closely with God. When we live a life of obedience—whether in our personal devotion, in how we love others, or in how we serve—we carry a fragrance that no stage or spotlight can create.
There are worship leaders who may never sing on a big platform, but their obedience in the quiet places ministers more deeply than a polished performance ever could.
A Word for Fellow Worship Ministers
If you’re in worship ministry or feeling called into it, let me tell you this from the heart: God is not looking for stars. He’s looking for servants. He’s not impressed by how well you can sing—He’s moved by how well you can follow.
Keep honing your gift. Keep learning. But above all, keep your ear tuned to His voice. Say yes when it’s uncomfortable. Step out when He calls. Trust that your obedience is never wasted—it is seen, honored, and multiplied by God.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not how beautifully you perform a song that touches heaven…
It’s how fully you surrender.
